An explosion in a refrigerator compressor killed five family members, including three children in Pujab's Jalandhar district, police said on Monday.

They added that the incident took place on a Sunday night and that the house caught fire after the blast. The deceased were named Yashpal Ghai (70), Ruchi Ghai (40), Mansha (14), Diya (12), and Akshay aged 10.

The entire family was watching a cricket match on TV in the drawing room at the time of the tragedy. There was a loud explosion in the house's refrigerator. Following this, the entire house caught fire. The gas stench was so intense that the family members inside the house were enveloped in flames and rendered unconscious before they could contemplate anything.

When the neighbours rushed to the spot after hearing the sound of the explosion, they immediately called the fire brigade after seeing the terrible fire.

According to authorities, a team of forensic experts has been summoned to collect samples in order to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

"We received information about an explosion-like incident in a house in Jalandhar's Avtar Nagar, after which we immediately reached the spot. We are investigating the reason behind the accident. We have called a team of forensic experts," Jalandhar Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Aditya said.
