A 22-year-old MBBS student committed suicide in his hotel room in the Government Medical College (GMC) in Jammu on Sunday. The deceased, identified as Falak Sayed Khan, was a second-year student. 

Falak, a resident of Harni village in Poonch’s Mendhar area, was found hanging with the ceiling fan inside the boys' hostel of the GMC at Bakshi Nagar after the door of his room was forcibly opened, the officials said, PTI reported.  

The reason behind the suicide remains unknown. However, police have launched an investigation to probe the reason behind the extreme step. 

According to a report by news agency PTI quoting officials, the body was handed over to the family after completing legal formalities like a post-mortem.

Earlier, a 23-year-old NEET aspirant committed suicide in Kota on Thursday by consuming a poisonous substance. The student named Roshan Sharma had been preparing for NEET for the past three years and had recently confided with his sister that he needed one more year to fully prepare for the examination.

The incident occurred a week after Roshan told his parents that he didn’t wish to appear for the NEET-UG examination on May 4.

The 2022 National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report recorded a total of 13,044 student suicides, representing an insignificant decrease of 0.3% from the previous year's numbers.
