Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Monday won the Jharkhand Assembly floor test with 45 of 76 lawmakers casting their votes in his favour. This came days after he was administered the oath of office. Assembly Speaker Rabindranath Mahto had given the go-ahead for the special Assembly session in this regard. Voting on the confidence motion took place after a comprehensive discussion between the ruling and opposition parties.

"Since 2019, we have been continuously following constitutional procedures and today again you all got to see the strength and power of the ruling party. On my behalf, I thank the Speaker and all the respected members of the ruling party," CM Soren said after winning the trust vote.

Earlier, Soren submitted a letter of support with the signatures of 44 MLAs to Governor CP Radhakrishnan. He had the backing of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Congress, RJD, and CPI-ML. A strategy was also devised during a meeting of the ruling party MLAs on Sunday, prior to the special session.

Hemant Soren Arrest:

Five months ago, Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a Jharkhand land grab case. He had to step down as the state CM prior to his arrest. On June 28, Soren was granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court. The order mentioned that the ED did not have sufficient evidence against him. He was released from jail on the same day.

Soren described the actions against him as part of a political conspiracy. Consequently, in his address to the Assembly, he will launch an offensive against the BJP. He has consistently maintained an aggressive stance.

Jharkhand Cabinet Expansion:

On Monday, Chief Minister Hemant Soren is also likely to expand his cabinet. There isn't much likelihood of major changes, but speculations are rife that Baidyanath Ram from the JMM quota and Irfan Ansari from Congress could be made ministers. Alamgir Alam's resignation has left a vacant seat that will be filled through these arrangements.
