Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced on X that the President of India has appointed Justice Sanjiv Khanna, currently a judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India, effective November 11, 2024, following consultation with the Chief Justice.
“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024,” Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal posted on X.

Justice Khanna is set to become the 51st Chief Justice of India on November 11, serving a term of nearly seven months until May 13, 2025. The outgoing Chief Justice DY Chandrachud recommended Justice Khanna, the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, to the Centre as his successor.
Who Is Justice Sanjiv Khanna?
Justice Sanjiv Khanna enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983, practicing in District Courts and the Delhi High Court in areas like constitutional law and taxation. He served as Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department and became Standing Counsel (Civil) for Delhi in 2004, also handling criminal cases as an Additional Public Prosecutor.
He was appointed an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and became a permanent judge in 2006, taking on leadership roles at the Delhi Judicial Academy and the Delhi International Arbitration Centre. Justice Khanna was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on January 18, 2019, and served as Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Service Committee from June 17, 2023, to December 25, 2023.
