Justice Surya Kant took oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, November 24, replacing the former CJI BR Gavai. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath-taking ceremony. Justice Kant will remain in office till February 9, 2027.

Vice President C P Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker OM Birla, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel of India H D Kumaraswamy, Minister of Health and Family Affairs J P Nadda, Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh and Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, among other prominent central ministers and figures, were in attendance during the ceremony.

Who Is Justice Surya Kant?

Born on February 10, 1962, into a middle-class family in Hisar district, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant began his career as a small-town practitioner at the Bar. He completed his Master’s degree in law from Kurukshetra University in 2011, where he secured "first class first."

Justice Kant served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court from October 5, 2018. Before that, he had authored several notable judgments at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, news agency PTI reported.
