Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil on Friday informed that the state cabinet has approved to rename Ramanagara district to Bengaluru South. Few days back, a delegation led by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and presented a memorandum to bolster the proposal to rename Ramanagara district to 'Bengaluru South'.
"The (state) cabinet has approved to rename Ramanagara district to Bengaluru South district. It is because of the aspirations and representations made by people's representatives and people at large...It is to get the Brand Bengaluru name. Bengaluru is a brand, you can't say 'no' to that. If it helps everyone, it is fine," Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil said while interacting with the media.
During HD Kumaraswamy's tenure as Chief Minister of the JD(S)-BJP coalition in August 2007, Ramanagara district was established. Kumaraswamy, who is now a Union Minister representing the JD(S), played a pivotal role in its creation. Kumaraswamy had earlier threatened to go on a fast unto death if the Karnataka government decides to go-ahead with the proposal to rename the district.
Ramanagara district is the political turf of Kumaraswamy as he has represented Ramanagara and Channapatna Assembly segments, and also had been an MP from the region.
The proposal has gained significance ahead of Channapatna Assembly bypolls the date for which is yet to be announced necessitated following Kumaraswamy's election to Lok Sabha from Mandya.
Shivakumar, who hails from the district, had last year too spoken about the plans to rename Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South, with which he hopes for impact of 'Brand Bengaluru' on smaller nearby towns.
"Whole world is looking at Bengaluru. We wanted to retain our district's original name, so leaders from the district held discussions and gave a representation to the Chief Minister under my leadership to rename it as Bengaluru South district. It will help Ramanagara, Channapatna, Kanakapura, Magadi in terms of development, industries, property value,” DK Shivakumar had said.
