Why Helmets Are Necessary For Children?

The accident data show that around 15 per cent of children involved in two-wheeler accidents die, as helmet manufacturers generally do not produce sizes suitable for young children, making it difficult for parents to provide proper protection to children, Jagran.com reported.

The lack of properly fitting helmets for children is a major factor contributing to deaths and injuries. However, the Karnataka High Court has mandated helmet use on two-wheelers and directed the transport authority to work with helmet manufacturers, two-wheeler dealers, and retailers to ensure that children's helmets are available at every store.

What did the Karnataka High Court Said?

- The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday directed the state transport authority to collaborate with helmet manufacturers, two-wheeler dealers, and retailers to ensure that helmets for children are available at all stores.

- The Karnataka High Court also called for the establishment of stocking norms, price regulations, and awareness campaigns aimed at educating the parents about the importance of helmets.

- The court also highlighted the need for child-specific harnesses. Unlike standard seat belts, these harnesses are designed to fit a child’s body structure, helping to reduce pressure on the head, spine, and chest in the event of an accident.

- The High Court emphasised that parents must be informed about these safety measures.
