In a shocking case from Madikeri, Karnataka, a mother and her son have been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering a relative over a property dispute in 2020. The Principal District and Sessions Court delivered the verdict on Thursday, holding Tarini (46) and her son Dharani Kumar (22) guilty of the crime.
The tragic incident took place on May 8, 2020, in K.Peraje village. The victim, Utharakumar, was standing on the main road near his bike when he was attacked by mother and her son using wielding machetes as weapon. Despite being injured, he attempted to escape into a nearby rubber plantation. However, Tarini and Dharani chased him down and killed him in a gruesome manner. In an effort to hide their crime, they washed the blood-stained machetes and clothing.
The police, under the then-Inspector Diwakar, swiftly arrested the mother-son duo on May 9, 2020. A chargesheet was filed on July 17, 2020, after a thorough investigation. During the trial, Principal District and Sessions Judge Hosamani Pundalik sentenced both accused to life imprisonment and imposed fines of Rs 1.10 lakh each. Additionally, they were sentenced to three years in prison and fined Rs 10,000 each for attempting to destroy evidence.
The case was prosecuted by Public Prosecutor K G Ashwini, who represented the government and presented compelling evidence. Kodagu Superintendent of Police K Ramarajan confirmed the details of the investigation and the court's ruling.
