The driver lost control of the bus, causing it to veer off the road, tumble into a ditch, and ultimately land on the roof of a house built on a slope. The impact caused significant damage to the house's roof. The bus, owned by the Bengaluru depot, was carrying 45 passengers at the time of the accident.
Ten of the injured were immediately taken to the government hospital in Jayapura, while two, including the driver, Venkappa, were transferred to the taluk hospital in Koppa for further treatment. Shanta, a resident of the house that was struck by the bus, also suffered injuries in the incident.
Locals assisted in evacuating the injured and organising their transport to nearby hospitals. According to reports, several eyewitnesses and locals alleged that the bus was speeding at the time of the incident. Some claimed that the vehicle, being an older model, might not have been in roadworthy condition. The police have registered a case at the Jayapura police station and are currently investigating the cause of the accident.
