Karur Stampede: The deadly stampede broke out at a rally of TVK chief Vijay that claimed the lives of nearly three dozen people while leaving over 60 injured. The stampede likely took place due to suffocation and overcrowding, which was anticipated moments before by the actor-turned-politician as he was seen throwing water bottles at the crowd.
Amid the commotion, Vijay was also seen seeking help from the police to find a 9-year-old girl, the missing news of whose had spread.
As the situation started to turn ugly, Vijay abruptly ended his address and tried to calm down the crowd. Several people fainted at the site and were brought to the hospital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin also expressed grief over the tragic incident and took immediate action. He sent Minister Senthil Balaji to the hospital and directed private hospitals to admit stampede victims without taking a fee.
