Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and former actor Vijay has been summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to appear at its New Delhi office at 11 am on Monday in connection with the investigation into the Karur campaign stampede that claimed 41 lives last year. The TVK chief is scheduled to leave Chennai at 7 am on a special flight to the national capital.

The probe pertains to the stampede that occurred on September 27 in Velusamipuram, Karur, during a public outreach programme addressed by Vijay. Earlier, the CBI had questioned senior TVK leaders, including Bussy Anand, Adhav Arjuna and CTR Nirmal Kumar, for nearly 17 hours in Delhi as part of the investigation.

TVK Chief’s Security In Delhi

There will be tight security in Delhi ahead of Vijay’s visit to the CBI office. According to a report by South First, the TVK had sought proper security arrangements from the Delhi Police over an email. The request was sent on behalf of the party by CTR Nirmal Kumar. In response, the Delhi Police confirmed that Y-category security, as mandated under the Union government’s protocol, will be provided to the TVK chief from the airport to all locations he visits.

CRPF personnel and officials from the Delhi Police are also expected to be present across each location. Stringent security arrangements will be in place along the route to the CBI office, at his place of stay and at other key locations. With large crowds anticipated outside the CBI office, security measures in the surrounding area are likely to be further tightened.

CBI Inquiry Into Karur Stampede

  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over charge of the case following the directions from the Supreme Court. 

  • A 15-member team led by ASP Mahesh Kumar, along with SP Praveen Kumar, DSP Ramakrishnan and Inspector Manoharan, conducted a detailed inspection in Karur where the stampede occurred. 

  • During the inspection, the team employed advanced 3D digital survey technology to evaluate road width, crowd capacity, bus stands and adjoining streets.

  • The case was initially registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by Karur Town Inspector Manivannan against TVK general secretary Bussy Anand, joint secretary Nirmal Kumar, western district secretary Mathiyazhagan and others.

  • The Tamil Nadu government filed a counter-affidavit before the apex court on December 2 seeking cancellation of the CBI probe.

  • It also requested the SC to transfer the jurisdiction of the investigation back to the SIT constituted by the Madras High Court earlier. 

  • The state government also requested the lifting of the stay on the inquiry being conducted by the one-member commission headed by retired Justice Aruna Jagadeesan, to allow the commission’s probe into the Karur incident to resume.
