Kashmir Weather: The Kashmir Valley is experiencing further dips in temperature, with Shopian recording a low of minus 8.2 degrees Celsius. Clear skies have led to the freezing of parts of Dal Lake and other water bodies during the ongoing ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’, officials said.
However, several places in Jammu and Kashmir have received and are still receiving snowfall, mostly in higher reaches. Meanwhile, snow clearance work on the strategic Mughal Road is being carried out on a war footing, but the road remains closed due to fresh snowfall and slippery conditions.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Poonch, is making all-out efforts to reopen the road from Peer Ki Gali, which lies at an altitude of about 13,000 feet. Traffic on the Mughal Road has been suspended since December 31 on the Shopian-Poonch stretch, including the important Poonch-to-Kashmir route via Shopian.
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.7 degrees Celsius on Friday night, up from the previous night’s minus 6.0 degrees Celsius, which was the coldest recorded in the city so far this season.
The bone-chilling cold conditions led to the freezing of parts of several water bodies, including the interiors of Dal Lake.
In south Kashmir, Shopian town was the coldest place across the valley, with the mercury settling at minus 8.2 degrees Celsius. The tourist resort of Pahalgam, which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath yatra, registered a low of minus 7.8 degrees Celsius.
Kashmir is currently in the midst of ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’, a 40-day period of extreme cold during which night temperatures often drop several degrees below freezing, and the chances of snowfall are the highest.
‘Chilla-i-Kalan’, which began on December 21 last year, ends on January 30.
However, the plains of the valley have not received any snowfall so far this season. The India Meteorological Department has said the weather in valley is likely to remain dry but cloudy until January 21.
