Kashmir Weather: Parts of the Dal Lake in Srinagar began to freeze on Friday as the city recorded its coldest night of the season on Thursday, with temperatures plunging to minus 6 degrees Celsius. Kashmir Valley is currently under the grip of a severe cold wave or Chilla-i-Kalan, with nights remaining extremely cold despite bright, sunny days bringing daytime temperatures up to 11 degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the weather is likely to remain dry but cloudy with a possibility of a further drop in minimum temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir in the coming days.

Srinagar Shivers Through Season’s Coldest Night; Temperatures Dip Across Valley

Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6 degrees Celsius on Thursday night, the coldest night of the season so far, with the temperature dropping from minus 5.1 degrees Celsius the previous night, officials said. The temperature was 4.1 degrees below normal. The extreme cold conditions have led to the freezing of parts of several water bodies, including the interiors of the Dal Lake here.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature in Gulmarg has been hovering between minus 7 and minus 9 degrees Celsius over the past few days. Although the hill station has received some snowfall, conditions are not yet suitable for skiing.

Jammu And Kashmir Braces For Temperature Dip Amid Chillai Kalan

Kashmir valley is currently experiencing the harshest 40-day winter period known as ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’, when night temperatures often plunge well below freezing, and snowfall is most likely. The Chillai Kalan, which began on December 21, will continue until January 30. Despite the extreme cold conditions, the plains of the valley have yet to see any snow this season.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather is likely to remain dry but dry until January 21, with nighttime temperatures falling further until January 10 before increasing by one to two degrees.
