Kerala: Three ayahs, or nursemaids were arrested at a government children’s home in Thiruvananthapuram on charges of assaulting a two-and-a-half-year-old girl by inflicting injuries on her vaginal area, as punishment for wetting the bed while sleeping, police said.
The children’s home is run by the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare. The arrest came on Tuesday after fingernail marks were found in the private parts of the girl, according to police.
Police said they were told about the injuries by a hospital, where the child was taken for an unrelated issue. They said the injury marks are about seven to eight days old.
They further said an investigation was conducted after the hospital reported the issue. They found that the caretakers had injured the girl as the child had wet her bed while sleeping.
Trivandrum city police commissioner G Sparjan Kumar said: “The three ayahs (nursemaids) were arrested under relevant sections of POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act and Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act."
