The Agriculture Minister of Kerala has sparked a stir with his relatively insensitive and impractical solution to the wild boar problem in the state. Minister P Prasad, in a statement on Saturday, suggested people should be allowed to kill and eat wild boars, claiming that boars are not an endangered species.
He said killing and consuming boar meat can help tackle the problem of crop destruction caused by boars.
Speaking at a programme organised by the Paalamel village panchayat, Prasad said that in his opinion, consumption of boar meat can offer a faster solution to the problem.
Pointing out to existing law prohibiting the consumption of boar meat, Prasad said, “In my opinion, people should be allowed to eat the meat of wild boars killed in agricultural fields.” Adding, “If people have the permission to kill wild boars and eat their meat, the issue can be resolved much faster. But the current law does not allow this."

The minister stressed that wild boars are not an endangered species, suggesting that controlled culling and consumption would not jeopardize their population. This statement follows the Kerala Assembly's recent approval of a bill aimed at amending the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. The proposed amendment seeks to mitigate the escalating human-animal conflict incidents across the state.
