Kerala Rain: Kerala is set to receive heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds this Saturday and Sunday, as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The state can expect rainfall amounts ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm over the next 24 hours. This surge in rainfall is linked to a cyclonic circulation that has formed over the southeastern Arabian Sea, near southern Kerala. A yellow alert has been issued for the districts of Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode.

In anticipation of the severe weather, control rooms have been established across the state to manage emergencies. An urgent meeting chaired by General Education Minister V Sivankutty took place to assess the state’s readiness for the monsoon. Officials reviewed the current conditions in Thiruvananthapuram and discussed necessary preparations.

Given the potential for isolation in mountainous and urban areas due to the weather, officials and field promoters have been directed to visit affected locations and take immediate action. The Minister also mentioned the need for department heads to organise plans for managing rain-related issues and coordinate relief efforts with local authorities.

Kerala Rain: Safety Advisory

Residents in areas vulnerable to landslides, mudslides and flash floods are urged to stay alert and relocate to safer locations when necessary. Those living in homes with unstable roofs should exercise caution during the high winds and avoid hazards like fallen trees and damaged utility poles. With river and reservoir levels rising, the public is advised to stay away from bodies of water, and travel to high-altitude tourist spots is discouraged. A fishing ban is also in effect along the Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts.
