Kerala Weather Update: A red alert was issued for Thiruvananthapuram district on Friday evening by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) as torrential rains continued to batter several areas of Kerala, disrupting daily life.
A three-hour red alert was issued by the IMD for Thiruvananthapuram because of the potential for significant rainfall and surface winds of up to 50 kmph.
According to the IMD earlier in the day, Kerala might see extensive rain over the next week as the monsoon is expected to arrive in the state over the next two days.
It also declared a daylong orange warning for the districts of Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
Red alerts were also issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad on May 25 and 26 and for Kannur and Kasaragod on May 24 and 26.
On May 26, the districts of Pathanamthitta and Idukki were also placed under red alert.
On May 24, seven districts received orange alerts, four districts received them on May 26, and six districts received them on May 27.
An orange alert denotes very heavy rain between 11 and 20 cm, a yellow alert denotes heavy rainfall between 6 and 11 cm, and a red alert denotes heavy to extremely heavy rainfall of more than 20 cm in a 24-hour period.
IMD has also issued a warning about severe winds in the interior and coastal regions, encouraging everyone to exercise caution, particularly fishermen.
