Kochi Metro Update: The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) on Saturday stated that several areas of Kochi are likely to witness power outages in the upcoming two months due to the metro expansion works. The authority stated that the metro services are being expanded to connect the distant regions to the key areas of the city. The KMRL also stated that the expansion will provide convenience to thousands of residents by cutting the travel time and reducing traffic congestion. It further advised the residents to follow the guidelines and plan their days accordingly to avoid inconveniences.

While providing details, the authority stated that several areas of the city, including Kadavanthra, Wellington Island, Mattancherry, Fort Kochi, Chellanam, and Aroor, are set to witness power outages from Monday until December 28. The authority stated that the existing electric towers will be replaced with new and taller towers near Vaazhakala, leading to disruption in the power supply. The KMRL stated that the construction work is set to commence on Monday, adding that the power supply might remain affected for the next few weeks.

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) assured that the works will be completed without any major disruption; however, the metro authority stated that some unplanned construction works might disturb the electricity supply. Earlier last month, KMRL stated that it is soon likely to launch a freight service to boost the financial activities in the region. While providing details, the officials stated that the service will be modelled on the system already introduced by the Delhi Metro.

It further stated that the freight services will only be available during non-peak hours, ensuring that passenger convenience is not affected. It further stated that the metro trains will be used for the transport of non-perishable, packaged goods. Earlier last year, the central government had directed the metro services across the country to introduce freight services to provide conveniences to the local businesses.
