Kochi Metro Update: Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is soon likely to launch a freight service to boost the financial activities in the region. While providing details, the officials stated that the service will be modelled on the system already introduced by the Delhi Metro. It further stated that the freight services will only be available during non-peak hours, ensuring that passenger convenience is not affected. It further stated that the metro trains will be used for the transport of non-perishable, packaged goods. Earlier last year, the central government had directed the metro services across the country to introduce freight services to provide conveniences to the local businesses.
The officials stated that the freight services will benefit the local businesses by cutting the travel time and reducing the traffic congestion. "It will help business establishments connect more closely with the metro and offer them a faster, more efficient way to move goods," the statement said. The Kochi Metro operates between Aluva and Tripunithura, covering a distance of 27.96 km. Additionally, work is underway to expand its service to Kakkanad.

The officials also stated that the final call on tariffs, timings, and other factors will be taken after consulting the business houses. Earlier last month, the KMRL stated that the metro services will be expanded in the upcoming months to boost the regional connectivity. Apart from this, the authority has also commenced the preliminary feasibility study to extend the Water Metro services to Cochin International Airport (CIAL).
The officials stated that the project will significantly provide relief to the commuters by cutting the travel time and reducing traffic congestion in the key regions of the city. The ambitious project will ensure that the passengers arrive at the airport by boat from Aluva, avoiding the congestion. The officials stated that the study is likely to be completed within a month, adding that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared after that.
