The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday took over the probe in the horrific rape and murder case of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Amid ardent protests seeking justice for the victim, her family and several doctors, who are aware of the autopsy report findings, have raised serious concerns over the potential involvement of more than one person in the crime.

A doctor, cited by The Indian Express, claimed that the victim’s autopsy report suggested multiple individuals might have raped the medico. “It is clear that this is not the work of a single individual… she was gang-raped,” the news organisation quoted doctor Subarna Goswami as saying.

The outcome of the case now depends on the crucial DNA profiling of the fluid found on the victim’s body, as the possibility of involvement of more than one person cannot be ruled out. As per Kolkata police sources, cited by News 18, the samples have been sent for examination.

According to CBI sources, a special team of medical officers and forensic experts from Delhi also visited the crime scene, where the doctor was allegedly raped.

Despite the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) taking over the probe, the case remains challenging due to several complicating factors. The crime scene was contaminated, and there were significant delays in evidence collection. Now, the CBI faces the daunting task of re-examining witnesses and reconstructing the crime scene.

Meanwhile, a team from the Indian Medical Association (IMA), containing 12 members, on Wednesday visited the victim’s house.
