Kolkata Rape Case: Three men have been arrested in connection with the gang rape of a student at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba area. The alleged assault happened between 7:30 pm and 11 pm on June 25, Thursday. As per officials, while two of the accused are the victim's seniors, one of them is a former student of the institute. The accused have been identified as Manojit Mishra (31), Pramit Mukherjee (20) and Zaib Ahmed (19).
Who Is TMC’s Manojit Mishra?
Manojit Mishra is a member of the Trinamool Congress' student wing. On Friday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) shared photographs of Manojit Mishra with top TMC leaders, including National General Secretary and CM Mamata Banerjee's nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, and State Health Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya.
Victim Recounts Horror
According to an NDTV report, in the complaint filed on Thursday, the victim said three men, whom she identified with the initials 'J', 'M', and 'P' - cornered her at 7:30 pm after a meeting of the ruling Trinamool Congress' student wing. She said 'M' and 'P' locked her in a room with 'J', who tried to rape her.
"I fought back... I cried and asked him to let me go... I even touched his feet but he didn't let me go..." she told the cops, "He tried to force me with the intention of having sex. I kept pushing him back. I asked him to let me go. 'I can't do this, I have a boyfriend and I love him', I said.”
The victim mentioned that she had a panic attack during the incident, as per the report.
"I had a panic attack and (was) having shortness of breath. Then 'J' called 'M' and 'P' to come inside. I asked for help but they were not helping me. Then I told them to bring an inhaler for me... 'M' brought that. I took it and felt better," she said and told the police she then tried to escape by running outside. However, the men caught her and continued the assault.
As per the victim, the main gate had been locked "and the guard was helpless and did not help".
She said she was then taken into the guard's room (and the guard was thrown out) where "'J' undressed me and started forcefully raping me. When I fought back, he blackmailed me..."
BJP-TMC Lock Horns
Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari slammed the state government over the incident, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
“The police is entirely responsible for this! The entire Kolkata Police has been taken to Digha (at Rath Yatra). What is Kolkata Police doing there? The Chief Minister has no right to be in her chair. We shall take this up,” Adhikari was quoted as saying by India Today.
BJP IT-cell chief Amit Malviya alleged that one of the accused belongs to the ruling party Trinamool Congress. "Horrific! A female law student was gang-raped inside a law college in Kasba, a suburb of Kolkata, on 25th June, by none other than a former student and two college staff members. Shockingly, reports suggest that a TMC member is also involved," Malviya stated in a post on X.
"The horror of RG Kar hasn’t faded, and yet such heinous crimes continue to rise daily in Bengal. Under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, West Bengal has become a nightmare for women. Rape has turned into a routine tragedy," he added.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress on Friday pledged tough action against those found guilty in the alleged gangrape of a student inside a law college campus in South Kolkata, assuring that "justice will be served".
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led TMC took to X and said, “We unequivocally condemn the tragic rape incident at South Calcutta Law College. @KolkataPolice have swiftly apprehended all 3 accused, and the full weight of the law will be brought to bear, ensuring the most severe measures are imposed on those found guilty.”
"This is a very serious incident and the state government and West Bengal Police do not sit quietly when such serious incidents occur; they take swift action. We do not want any such incident to occur. There should be no politics over such incidents. Their (accused) religion, caste, name and identity do not matter. If they are affiliated to any organisation, it does not matter. Opposition has alleged that the accused had been TMC Student Union leader, so the president of the body also made it clear today that student body's elections have not taken place. The names of these accused did not appear in the last committee formed in 2022 in that law college. So, they have no connection with TMC," Bengal Minister Shashi Panja said, denying any connection of the accused with TMC, as quoted by news agency ANI
Apart from this, National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo moto cognizance of the incident and has saught a detailed action-taken report from Kolkata police within three days.
