Kolkata Metro: In a shocking act of violence, a 17-year-old student was fatally stabbed by a friend during a heated argument at Dakshineswar Metro Station on Friday afternoon. The incident, which unfolded in a public area of the station, left commuters in panic and raised serious questions about metro security, a senior police official confirmed.
According to the police, the victim, Manojit Yadav of Baranagar and a student of Bagbazar High School, reportedly got into an argument with a friend while waiting at the station.
“As the situation heated up, another friend allegedly stabbed Manojit with a knife," news agency PTI quoted the officer as saying.
Manojit was immediately rushed to the hospital, but tragically, he died from his injuries on the way. Preliminary investigations revealed that the teenager was a regular Metro commuter and often travelled home with the same group of friends.
The fact that a weapon made its way into what is supposed to be a high-security Metro zone has triggered widespread concern over potential lapses in screening and monitoring. Authorities are now combing through CCTV footage to determine how the attacker managed to smuggle in the knife.
A Metro Railway spokesperson clarified that the incident did not take place on the platform or inside the ticketed zone but in a public access area.
“The incident occurred in a non-ticketing area near the Dakshineshwar temple side of the Metro entry gate,” the spokesperson said, adding, When asked whether the area where the stabbing happened falls under Metro Railway premises, the spokesperson confirmed it does, but explained the limitations of security before the turnstile zone.

“It is not always humanly possible for RPF personnel to keep track of every individual’s movement before the turnstile gate and on the rear of the ticket counter,” he said.
He also stated that security checks within the ticketed area are strict, and that carrying weapons through the metal detectors is not possible.

“There is a stringent security check at the turnstile gates with metal detectors, and anyone carrying arms won’t be able to get past the security layer.”
He added, “However, we are assessing and evaluating the existing security system.”
As news of the stabbing spread across social media and local news channels, anxiety and fear gripped commuters, especially those travelling with children or alone. In response, Metro Railway issued an official statement in the evening to reassure the public.
“An unfortunate incident of alleged stabbing has taken place in the non-ticketing area of the Dakshineswar Metro station. Metro authorities have immediately taken appropriate measures, and police authorities are investigating the incident,” the statement said.
