The Kargil Democratic Alliance on Monday questioned why Sonam Wangchuk is under suspicion for attending a climate change conference in Islamabad, even as India continues to play cricket with Pakistan despite heightened tensions between the two countries in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack.

At a press conference in Delhi, Sajjad Kargili of KDA said, "He attended a UN conference on climate change. If playing cricket matches with Pakistan is not a crime, why is this being politicised?"

Demanding a judicial probe into the September 24 violence, Kargili said, "We have given our blood to protect the borders. How is it fair to treat us this way? One of the dead was a soldier, and the responsibility lies with the government. Ordering fire on protesters is itself a crime".

The activists reiterated their demands of statehood and the Sixth Schedule, among others. Kargli said, "The demand for Sixth Schedule and statehood is non-negotiable," and the government wants "bureaucrats to run Ladakh while the people remain silent and uninvolved."

Kargili also said that the Centre only convenes a meeting when Ladakh boils over in protests and nothing when there is no protest. "Whenever we have been silent, nothing has happened. Even this year, it was only after 11 days of protest that the government called us for talks."

Wangchuk was arrested on September 26, two days after the protests in Leh turned violent and four people died while several others were injured.

Wangchuk was detained under the NSA and was lodged in Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan. Speaking about his detention, Ladakh DGP SD Singh Jamwal said that they had arrested a Pakistani PIO and the climate activist was in touch with him.

He added that Wangchuk visited Islamabad to attend an event of newspaper Dawn and also to Bangladesh, which prompts to investigate his Pakistani links. The DGP also accused Wangchuk of instigating violence to derail the talks with the Centre
