Ladakh Protest: The Ladakh administration has alleged that some sections deliberately derailed peace efforts and misled the public during the recent protests that turned violent in Leh, resulting in four deaths. Chief Secretary Dr Pawan Kotwal said that despite the government’s readiness for dialogue, a few leaders “worked with a premeditated approach” to disrupt the talks for personal and political gain.
Dr Kotwal said the administration had already scheduled discussions for September 25 and 26 to address the demands raised by protestors. However, instead of calling off their hunger strike, certain groups continued with the agitation, he claimed. This, according to him, led to a breakdown in law and order on September 24, when clashes between demonstrators and security forces resulted in fatalities and injuries.
“The entire episode could have been avoided if some leaders had acted responsibly and called off the hunger strike,” Dr Kotwal said. He added that investigating agencies have gathered proof of attempts to sabotage the process and expressed confidence that the inquiry would reveal the full sequence of events, including details of the firing.

Ladakh Protest
Activist Sonam Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) on September 26 for allegedly instigating the protests. The demonstrations, demanding statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule, escalated after police opened fire on protesters in Leh, leaving over 50 injured.
A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident, with the report expected within four weeks. Authorities said the probe would examine both the causes of the violence and the actions taken by the security forces during the unrest.
