Leh Ladakh Protests: The central government has held social activist Sonam Wangchuk responsible for the recent clash between protestors and security forces in Leh on Wednesday. In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs said that despite appeals from several local leaders to call off his hunger strike, Wangchuk continued to stir public sentiment by mentioning uprisings like the Arab Spring-style protests and Gen-Z protests in Nepal.

Wangchuk on Wednesday ended his 15-day hunger strike after clashes erupted in Leh over the demands of statehood and the inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule. In a press conference, he announced the decision as a precautionary measure to bring stability in the region. He further condemned the protest and appealed for peace in the region.

What We Know So Far About Leh Ladakh Protests 

-The statehood for Ladakh movement descended into violence, arson, and street clashes in Leh on Wednesday, leaving four people dead and at least 80 injured, including 40 police personnel, officials said, as per PTI.

-On September 24, at around 11:30 am, a mob instigated by his provocative speeches left the venue of the hunger strike and attacked a political party office as well as the Government office of the CEC Leh. They also put these offices on fire, attacked the security personnel, and torched police vehicle, as per the government.

-Barring incidents that happened early on Wednesday, the situation was brought under control by 4 pm, as per the government.

-Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta announced curfew across Leh district to restore order.

-According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Activist Sonam Wangchuk began a hunger strike on September 10, demanding the 6th Schedule and statehood for Ladakh.

-The Centre said, "It is clear that the mob was incited by Shri Sonam Wangchuk through his provocative statements. Incidentally, amidst these violent developments, he broke his fast and left for his village in an ambulance without making serious efforts to control the situation."

-The government also requested that people should not circulate the old and provocative videos in the media and on social media.

-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Amit Malviya on Wednesday accused the Congress of "rioting" in Ladakh and attacked Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
