Srinagar Lok Sabha Election 2024: The redrawn Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency, one of the 96 constituencies across 10 states and union territories (UTs) that went to the polls on Monday, recorded 37.98 per cent voter turnout, as per data provided by the Election Commission (EC). Voting for the fourth phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha election concluded on the seat without any untoward incident.

The turnout recorded in Srinagar this time is the highest since 1996, when the constituency in Jammu & Kashmir witnessed nearly 41 per cent voting in that year's general election. Polling took place in 2,135 polling stations across the districts of Srinagar, Ganderbal, Pulwama, and Budgam and Shopian districts partly this year.

Srinagar Lok Sabha Election: First General Polls Sans Article 370

Quite significantly, this was the first Lok Sabha election in the Kashmir valley since the abrogation of Article 370 and the enactment of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The voter turnout in Srinagar was 40.94 per cent in 1996, 30.06 per cent in 1998, 11.93 per cent in 1999, 18.57 per cent in 2004, 25.55 per cent in 2009, 25.86 per cent in 2014 and 14.43 per cent in 2019.

Lauding the voter turnout recorded in Srinagar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter): "Would especially like to applaud the people of Srinagar Parliamentary constituency for the encouraging turnout, significantly better than before. The abrogation of Article 370 has enabled the potential and aspirations of the people to find full expression. Happening at the grassroots level, it is great for the people of J&K, in particular the youth."

Srinagar Lok Sabha Election 2024: Voting By Displaced Kashmiris

The Election Commission enabled displaced Kashmiris to cast their votes by establishing polling stations at various relief camps in Delhi, Jammu and Udhampur. As many as 21 special polling stations were established in Jammu, one in Udhampur, and four in Delhi.
