In a major setback for the Opposition parties, both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Monday junked the impeachment motions against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
In a statement, Lok Sabha Secretariat said, "Lok Sabha speaker rejects opposition notice to bring motion to remove Gyanesh Kumar as Chief Election Commissioner."
In Rajya Sabha, the motion was trashed by Chairman and Vice President CP Radhakrishnan. The notice of motion was moved on March 12, 2026 in the Rajya Sabha, and was signed by 63 Opposition MPs.
In Lok Sabha, the motion was signed by 130 Opposition MPs. The motion to remove the CEC was brought in the Parliament by the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which has been fiercely protesting against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.

It was the first instance that the motion was submitted in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, seeking to remove Kumar from the post, alleging a partisan attitude.
The notice had listed seven charges against CEC Kumar, including allegations of "partial and discriminatory conduct in office", "deliberate obstruction of investigation of electoral fraud", "proven misbehaviour", and "mass disenfranchisement".
The Opposition had cited the alleged manner in which the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls was handled in Bihar.
The members have accused CEC Kumar of alleged biased conduct in the functioning of the Election Commission. It also said that the commission disproportionately targeted West Bengal during the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
The notice also mentioned issues like ill-treatment towards the Opposition and his biased conduct towards one political party.
The notice against Gyanesh Kumar came after mounting allegations from opposition parties.
