The ruling NDA chose to renominate BJP MP Om Birla for the role of Lok Sabha Speaker without deciding the Deputy Speaker, which has left the government and opposition in a deadlock. In response, the Opposition nominated Kerala-based Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh for Speaker, thereby establishing an uncommon battle for the prestigious position.
The elections to decide the Lok Sabha Speaker will be held on June 26.
Voting To Be Done Via Paper Slips
News agency PTI quoted experts saying that if the opposition insists on splitting the votes during the Lok Sabha Speaker's election, votes will be cast on paper slips. They highlighted that seats still need to be assigned to members, hence the electronic display system cannot be used.
According to constitutional expert and former Lok Sabha secretary general PDT Acharya, the proposals will be listed in the order in which they were received. He further stated that the decision will be made by division if necessary.
He stated that the presiding officer would declare the person elected as the Speaker of the House after the Lok Sabha Speaker's name has been confirmed by the House through a voice vote.
There will be no voting on the proposal following the election by voice vote. Nonetheless, elections about this will take place if the opposition requests a division of votes in the House. In such a scenario, House officials will provide slips to the Members of Parliament, following which voting will take place.
