PNG Connection: Amid the Middle East crisis, the energy supply chain has been disrupted due to the ongoing conflict between Iran, the US, Israel, and the West Asia region. Despite not being directly involved, India is bearing the brunt of the war’s consequences.

The conflict in West Asia has led to a cooking fuel crisis in India, which imports approximately 60 per cent of its total cooking gas requirements. Of this, around 90 per cent is routed through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has currently blocked.

As LPG shortages are being reported, many people are turning to an alternative fuel source Piped Natural Gas (PNG). So, what exactly is PNG, and how can you get a connection, especially during an LPG shortage? Let’s break it down.

How to get a PNG connection?

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is typically supplied in cylinders to homes, while PNG (Piped Natural Gas) is delivered directly to your home via an underground pipeline. According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), if you want to get a PNG connection, you need to follow a simple process that involves registering, verifying your identity, and paying the necessary charges.

Once your application is approved, you’ll be assigned a unique Business Partner (BP) Number. This helps the gas provider track and manage your account. After that, the service provider will install the required infrastructure, such as the pipeline, gas meter, regulator, and valves. Once everything is set up, you’ll enjoy a continuous supply of natural gas for cooking and other domestic uses.

Step-by-Step Guide to Getting a PNG Connection

- First, check if PNG pipelines are available in your area. You can do this by contacting local providers like Adani Gas, IGL, or Indian Oil.

- You can apply for a PNG connection either online through your local gas distributor’s website (like Adani, GAIL, IGL) or by visiting their office in person.

- You’ll need to provide some basic documents, including identity proof (Aadhaar or Passport), address proof (like an Electricity Bill), and proof of ownership (Sale Deed or Tax Receipt).

- Once you submit your documents, you’ll need to pay a refundable security deposit (usually between Rs 6,000–Rs 7,000). A technician will visit your home to ensure everything is safe and up to code.

- Once everything is approved, a team will come to install the pipeline, gas meter, and regulator. After installation, you’ll have a steady, reliable supply of natural gas for your household needs.
