The Ludhiana police on Friday arrested a husband-and-wife duo in connection with the brutal murder of 35-year-old Davinder Kumar, whose dismembered body was discovered in an abandoned plot near the Jalandhar Bypass a day earlier.

According to the police, the victim’s body was recovered on Thursday after a passerby noticed a drum lying in a vacant plot under the jurisdiction of the Salem Tabri police station and alerted authorities. Upon inspection, the police found the body chopped into several pieces and stuffed inside the drum. The remains were later sent for postmortem examination.

A three-member medical board that conducted the autopsy has found indications that Davinder may have been injected with some substance in his left hand before being killed. However, officials said the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after viscera samples, which have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory, are analysed.

The body was brought for the postmortem in six pieces, with the victim’s right hand missing. Police have launched a search operation to recover the missing hand and suspect that a few other severed body parts may have been dumped at different locations.

The prime accused has been identified as Shamsher alias Shera, a carpenter by profession. Investigations revealed that Davinder and Shamsher were close friends, and a dispute over money is suspected to have triggered the murder. The accused allegedly used a saw to dismember the body before disposing of the remains in the drum.

Davinder Kumar, a resident of Bharti Colony in Ludhiana, had recently returned from Mumbai, where he was working at a printing and graphic design shop. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are awaited.
