Days after the Hima committee report made shocking revelations about the dire condition of women actors in the Malayalam film industry, a PIL, seeking action against sexual offenders, has been filed in the Kerala High Court. The report, based on the statements of various witnesses, claimed female actors in the Kerala film industry were subjected to several atrocities, including sexual assaults and denial of wages, by a mighty lobby of producers, directors and actors.

The PIL seeks direction to the Kerala DGP to initiate action against the culprits based on the report. It also sought a detailed report be handed over to the state police chief to initiate criminal proceedings against wrongdoers.

The Hema Committee was formed after a woman actor was sexually assaulted in a moving car in Kerala. It was tasked to ascertain issues faced by the women working in the film industry. The report discovered that the female actors in the Kerala industry lacked proper toilets and changing rooms at shooting locations. Besides, as per findings, a woman or girl, who is ever approached by a production company or certain individuals, is often asked to make ‘adjustments’ and ‘compromises’ in exchange for opportunities.

It said the terms-- "compromise" and "adjustment"-- are well-known among women in the Malayalam film industry, and they imply that women are expected to be available for sex on demand.

Responding to the shocking disclosures, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan said the state government would take stern and 'appropriate action' against all individuals who are part of this lobby.

“If any of those who testified before the Hema Commission come forward with complaints, appropriate action will be taken. No matter how high-ranking, everyone will be held accountable before the law,” ANI quoted Vijayan as saying.
