A man was mauled to death at the Tirupati Zoo after he tried clicking a selfie with a lion. The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Prahlad Gujjar. He was a resident of Rajasthan's Alwar.
Reportedly, the man went inside the cage and tried to get a picture of the lion. He went into a restricted area and ignored the warning of a caretaker to back off. He climbed a fence that was more than 25 feet tall and dove into the cage.
Before the caretaker could intervene, Gujjar was mauled to death by the lion, named Dongalpur. A police case has been filed and a post-mortem is being carried out to determine whether Gujjar was intoxicated when he entered the enclosure.
According to an official quoted by NDTV, Gujjar was in the zoo by himself, and officials are trying to contact his family.
Dongalpur, Sundari, and Kumar are the three lions in the zoo; the last one was on exhibit on Thursday. Dongalpur is currently kept in a cage and will be monitored.
In a separate incident that took place in September last year, a 45-year-old woman was mauled to death by a leopard in the Sohagi Barwa Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj. The victim, Sharda Rajbhar, was a resident of Semarhwa village in the Nautanwa Police Station area.
A forest ranger, RP Singh, confirmed that a leopard had killed the woman and also requested the villagers to remain on alert due to the movement of wild animals in the area.
