THE COUNTING of votes for the Meghalaya Assembly election will be held on Thursday (March 2 ) from 8 am. A day ahead of the counting of votes in 59 assembly constituencies of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, the Election Commission of India has set up 13 counting centres and taken the necessary security measures across the state. The security at all EVM strong rooms has been strengthened with up to three layers of security in place.
The voting in the 59 assembly constituencies of Meghalaya took place on February 27, and by the end, the state saw a voter turnout of over 76 per cent.
Meghalaya Assembly Seats
Meghalaya has a 60-member assembly. As the polling in the Sohiong constituency was adjourned following the death of one of the UDP candidates, the election was held in 59 seats. The Congress and the BJP contested in 59 seats, while the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) had placed nominees in 56 constituencies, the TMC in 57 and the UDP in 46.
Meghalaya Election 2018
In 2018, the Congress had won the highest number of seats at 21, while Conrad Sangma's NPP was at 20. The BJP had secured just 2 seats but the BJP's vote share was close to 10 per cent, jumping from a mere 1.27 per cent in 2013. Meanwhile, United Democratic Party (UDP) won 6 seats, the People's Democratic Front (PDF) bagged 4, won 3 by IND, and others secured 2 seats.
Post-Poll Alliance Chances
It is expected that Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma could form a post-election alliance with his former coalition partner, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), after exit polls conducted by many media channels indicated that the northeastern state would have a hung house, with NPP being the single-largest party.
