Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder: In a dramatic twist to the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, Sonam Raghuvanshi, who stands accused of orchestrating the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, told a roadside dhaba owner in Uttar Pradesh that her husband was killed while trying to save her. Hours before her arrest, Sonam reportedly claimed she had been targeted by a group of men trying to snatch her jewellery and that Raja died protecting her.

Sahil Yadav, the owner of Kashi Dhaba along the Varanasi-Ghazipur highway, recounted his unexpected encounter with Sonam early Monday morning. Around 1 am, a visibly distressed Sonam approached his eatery, asking for help and a phone to contact her family.

“Last night around 1 a.m., Sonam Raghuvanshi was walking on the roadside and came to me asking for help. She asked for a mobile phone. When I asked what happened, she said her phone had been stolen, and it was urgent. She gave me a number, and I called for her. She spoke to her family,” Yadav told IANS.

He further recalled, “She was crying so hard that she could barely speak. She asked for water, and I gave her the water. Since she couldn’t talk properly, I spoke to them as well. They requested that I contact the nearest police station to ensure her safety.”

Yadav then asked Sonam what had happened, and she shared a brief version of the events that unfolded. “She said that in May, she got married. She and her husband had gone to Meghalaya for their honeymoon, and Raja was killed while trying to protect her from a group of men who attempted to snatch her jewellery,” he said. Sonam, however, claimed she had no recollection of how she ended up in Uttar Pradesh.

Following her call, the local police were alerted, and Sonam formally surrendered at Nandganj police station in Ghazipur. Uttar Pradesh ADG (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash confirmed her presence at Kashi Dhaba and stated that she was taken to Sadar Hospital for medical examination before being shifted to the One Stop Centre in Ghazipur.

Meghalaya Police suspect Sonam surrendered under pressure, as the multi-state investigation rapidly closed in on those involved. Meghalaya IGP Dalton P. Marak told IANS that she would be brought back to the state for detailed questioning and legal proceedings.

Alongside Sonam, police have arrested several others linked to the case, including her alleged boyfriend Raj Singh Kushwaha and two others, Vishal Singh Chauhan from Indore and Aakash Rajput from Lalitpur. Another suspect named Anand was apprehended from Bina in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district.

According to sources cited by IANS, Sonam was in a relationship with Raj Kushwaha before her marriage, and he is believed to have played a key role in planning Raja’s murder.
