A Mumbai-bound Air India flight returned to Delhi after being airborne for about one hour due to a technical glitch. The Boeing-777 aircraft landed safely after air turnback.
According to an Air India spokesperson cited by news agency ANI, the flight AI887 from Delhi to Mumbai faced a technical issue after take-off, after which the plane landed back in Delhi as per standard operating procedures (SOPs).
The spokesperson said that the aircraft is undergoing the necessary checks. "Our ground team at Delhi is providing immediate assistance to the passengers, and alternative arrangements have been made to fly them to their destination shortly. At Air India, the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew remain top priority," the airline spokesperson added.
What did the DGCA say?
Shortly after the incident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a statement that the air turnback was made after the crew observed oil pressure dip during flip retraction.
The aviation watchdog stated that the aircraft was "involved in Airturnback as during flap retraction after take-off, the flight crew observed low engine oil pressure on Engine No. 2 (Right-Hand engine)."
"Shortly thereafter, the engine oil pressure dropped to zero. Following the procedure crew shut down the No.2 engine and the aircraft landed safely at Delhi," the DGCA added.
The DGCA added that inspection and ratification were in progress, and the Air India Permanent Investigation Board will probe the incident.
"Inspection/rectification is in progress. The incident would be investigated by the Permanent Investigation Board of the Airline under the supervision of Director Air Safety(NR), DGCA," the official said.
Civil Aviation Ministry directs DGCA to probe
Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Ministry has sought a detailed report from the airline and directed the DGCA to conduct an investigation.
"The Ministry has sought a detailed report from Air India, and DGCA has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation.
"The airline has been directed to extend all assistance to passengers and accommodate them on subsequent flights," the ministry said in a post on X.
