Aizawl News: At least 17 workers have lost their lives while several others are feared trapped after an under-construction railway bridge collapsed near Sairang area of Mizoram on Wednesday police said. The incident took place at around 10 am, about 21 km from Aizawl. According to police, almost 35 to 40 workers were present at the site.
"Seventeen bodies have been recovered from the debris so far... many others are still missing," a police officer said, as quoted by news agency PTI.
Soon after the information was received about the incident, railway officers rushed to the spot, said Sabyasachi De, Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) of Northeast Frontier (NF) Railways. Adding that he said senior officials of Northeast Frontier Railway will also visit the site.
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga expressed his condolences to all the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
"Under construction railway over bridge at Sairang, near Aizawl collapsed today; at least 17 workers died: Rescue under progress. Deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy. I extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," CM Zoramthanga wrote on X.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his condolences to those who lost their loved ones in the Aizawl railway bridge collapse. PM Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMMRF) to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
"Pained by the bridge mishap in Mizoram. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. Rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being given to those affected. An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Rs. 50,000 would be given to the injured," PMO said.
