He was later scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu to stake claim to form the government for a third time in a row. The BJP leader is set to take oath as the Prime Minister on Sunday (June 9) for a consecutive term. While the BJP failed to get a majority on its own in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) got 293 seats and is comfortably above the majority mark of 272 in the 543-member lower house.
Modi's bid to return as the Prime Minister was approved by NDA MPs on Friday. Besides MPs belonging to NDA allies, senior leaders of the coalition, including chief ministers, were also attending the meeting. During the meeting, Modi's name was proposed by senior BJP leader and former Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for the post of the leader of BJP and the NDA in the Lok Sabha.
The resolution was unanimously adopted by NDA leaders like TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu, JD(U)'s Nitish Kumar, and LJP (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan. Following Modi's election as the leader of NDA MPs in Lok Sabha, senior members of the alliance like Naidu, Kumar and Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde will join him for a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu where she will be presented with a list of parliamentarians endorsing the BJP leader, some NDA members cited by PTI had said.
