In a tragic incident, a man has died, and a woman has been admitted to the hospital in Mumbai's Worli area, apparently following heavy consumption of alcohol at a concert. Both had attended the 'Klangkuenstler All Night Long' music event at NSCI Dome Worli late last night.
Both of them, Vrishabh Gangurde (28), resident of Mahim and his female friend were in a heavily drunken state, the sources revealed. A source at Tardeo police station said the man fell ill suddenly while the show was on, and he was taken to Breach Candy Hospital in Malabar Hill, where he was declared dead by doctors.
Preliminary tests suggested dehydration could have been the cause, but the official results will be out in the detailed medical report. The woman, aged 31, who also fell sick at the same show, is said to be stable at Jaslok Hospital, according to police. It is claimed by hospital staff that the woman said she was drinking energy drinks.
The police are not suspecting drug abuse immediately, though they are checking CCTV and other data from the site and the surrounding areas to see how things unfolded. A different ADR was registered in the case of the woman and the man at Tardeo police station.
This is not the first case of a person dying during a music concert held in the city, after another case earlier this year in which two students died in a Mumbai concert, which was later attributed to a drug overdose.
Worli gig was initially denied by the local police, who refused permission, considering the Goregaon event and asked if safety and crowd control could be managed at Worli despite the incident. Later approval came from senior officials, going against the police recommendation.
The music event at Worli had 4 stalls selling alcohol, which were checked and approved by the Excise dept. The concert was held from 6 PM to 10 PM with tickets of Rs 4000 and ended on schedule. All licenses and permissions issued by the state have come under scrutiny.
Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR), and questioning is going on with more than 8 people, at least among whom some organisers are included. The police are also checking the organisers' accounts to see if there was any report of ticket black market or overcharging by them.
The security system used, especially the private bouncers, has also come under police scrutiny. Experts are examining the concert ground and the ventilation system, along with checking the number of people present at the location at that given time.
