BMC New Parking Plan: In a major update for the commuters, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is soon likely to announce a smart project for Mumbai. As per the reports, the authority is in the final stage to finalise the consultant to bring all the parking spaces in the city into a digital dashboard. The system will provide convenience to the commuters, as they will be able to access the facility through a mobile application or web portal. It is likely to make the parking more systematic, reducing traffic congestion, especially during the peak hours.
While the BMC proposed the idea for the first time back in 2020, it could not be implemented due to COVID-19 and other reasons. However, the authority is soon likely to table the proposal to finalise a contractor for developing the interface. The BMC has presented the idea and has earmarked an initial budget of Rs 3 crore for this project.
The smart parking system is likely to improve the travel experience and reduce rushes in the capital city of Maharashtra. While the BMC controls 26 parking lots in different regions of Mumbai, the authority runs over 350 on-street parking lots. The city has been struggling with low parking space and a high volume of vehicles, especially during the monsoon.
Mumbai, among all the metro cities, has the highest vehicle density, leading to severe traffic congestions in several regions. As per the Maharashtra government data, the capital city has a vehicle density of 2,300 cars in every kilometer (KM). The report also asserted that the number of vehicles has significantly surged in the past few years.
