Heavy rains in India’s financial capital Mumbai have caused chaos throughout the city. Roads and lanes have turned into rivers and streams. Due to the continuous rainfall, suburban train services and air traffic have been severely disrupted. The situation has become so dire that the army, along with the NDRF, has been deployed to get rid of the situation.
The normal life of the Mumbaikers has been severely affected. On Monday, people had to navigate through waterlogged streets, facing traffic disruptions. In some areas of Mumbai, more than 300 mm of rain was witnessed in just six hours, flooding the roads and low-lying areas.
The heavy rainfall continued throughout the day, aggravating the difficulties for residents. The schools have also been shut down across the city. Amidst this, an elderly woman died from burns caused by a short circuit.
Due to heavy rain forecast in Mumbai, Mumbai Suburbs, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, all exams scheduled for today (July 9, 2024) at the University of Mumbai have been postponed. New dates will be announced soon, ANI reported quoting University of Mumbai sources.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red alert for Mumbai on Tuesday, forecasting heavy rainfall. Despite installing high-capacity pumps in low-lying areas, water logging due to the rain has caused significant disruptions to Central Railway services. This has caused inconvenience to thousands of passengers, as local trains were halted on the tracks for hours.
Several outstation trains bound for Mumbai were also stuck. After restoring services during the day, Central Railway's Harbour Line services were suspended again on Monday night due to water logging on the tracks.

Sources have reported that flight services at Mumbai Airport were severely impacted due to low visibility, leading to a shutdown of operations on the runway for over an hour and the cancellation of over 50 flights. The rains have also impacted BEST bus services, with several buses operating on alternate routes to avoid waterlogging in areas like Parel, Gandhi Market, Sangam Nagar, and Malad Subway.
