Murshidabad Waqf Violence: In a big development in the Murshidabad Waqf violence case, the West Bengal Police detained around 12 people from Odisha's Jharsuguda district on Monday. A Special Task Force (STF) of the West Bengal Police nabbed them in Jharsuguda.

Prime Suspect's Sons Detained

According to police, among those apprehended were two sons of Ziaul Sheikh, one of the prime suspects in the murder of a man and his son in Murshidabad's Jafrabad. They said after being detained, the suspects were taken to the Banharpali police station for questioning.

Sheikh has already been arrested by the West Bengal Police, the officer said. These people used to work as labourers in Bundubahal in the Banharpal police station area.

They had gone home to Murshidabad during Eid and allegedly took part in the violence, he said.

Following the violence, they returned to Jharsuguda and were in hiding, he said.

"The people detained by the STF are being questioned, and their mobile phones are being verified to ascertain their presence in Murshidabad on the day of the violence. Based on the prima facie evidence, action will be taken," the officer said.

Three Persons Killed In Violence

Three people were killed, several people were injured, and scores of shops and houses were vandalised as violence rocked parts of Murshidabad during protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

"Husband held hostage; money, jewellery looted, house set on fire"

Meanwhile, BJP IT department in-charge Amit Malviya on Monday spotlighted a purported incident of robbery and arson in Murshidabad during the recent violence in the district, where a family was robbed of cash and gold jewellery, and their home was set on fire.

In a post on X, Malviya, while sharing a video of the victim, said, "Rs 7 lakh had been saved for their daughter's wedding, and Rs 4 lakh for medical treatment. The husband was held hostage while all the money and gold jewellery in the house were looted. They were asked, 'Do you want your husband or your money?' Their entire home was then set on fire. This is the real picture of Murshidabad."

West Bengal BJP President and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar confirmed that several incidents of arson and looting had occurred during the Murshidabad violence. He also alleged that Hindus were threatened at gunpoint and forced to chant Islamic religious slogans.
