Mamallapuram | Jagran News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday met for the second informal summit in the historic coastal city of Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu.

The meeting between the two leaders over dinner went on for over two hours in which they agreed to work together to fight ‘radicalisation and terrorism’ as common challenges, said the government in a late-night briefing.

“There was an acknowledgment that both the countries are very complex and very diverse. The two leaders said that these are large countries and that radicalisation is a matter of concern to both and that both would work together so that radicalisation and terrorism did not affect our multi-cultural, multi-ethnic multi-religious societies,” said Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale.

He further said that Xi said he was looking forward to working with Modi on all issues adding that both leaders ‘share a very personal rapport’.

Xi, who arrived in Chennai on Friday afternoon, was accorded a red-carpet welcome in the state capital. He then made his way to the coastal town of Mamallapuram, where he was received by PM Modi.

Xi’s meeting with PM Modi is significant as it comes against the backdrop of a heated exchange of words between the two countries over Jammu and Kashmir after India revoked the special status of the state.

The Chinese President recently met Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, after which a joint statement said that China is paying ‘close attention’ to the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and that the issue should be properly and peacefully resolved based on the ‘UN Charter’.

However, India retorted to Jinping's remark on Kashmir and said that its “not for other countries to comment on New Delhi’s internal affairs”.
