India on Monday emphasised the need for “all parties" to work towards the preservation of unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the war-torn Syria. In a statement, issued a day after Assad’s regime fell, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India advocates for a peaceful and “inclusive Syrian-led political process" that takes into account the aspirations of all sections of the society.
Bashar al-Assad’s ouster by Islamist rebels in Syria is likely to have implications in New Delhi, as India and Syria have a long-standing relationship which includes historical, cultural, and civilisational ties. This relationship has evolved over the years, particularly during Assad's tenure.
“We are monitoring the situation in Syria in the light of ongoing developments. We underline the need for all parties to work towards preserving the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. We advocate a peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led political process respecting the interests and aspirations of all sections of Syrian society," he said.
“Our Embassy in Damascus is in contact with the Indian community, for their safety and security," the MEA added.

Situation In Syria
Syrian state television aired a video statement from rebels on Sunday announcing Assad's overthrow and the release of all prisoners. They urged citizens to protect the institutions of the ‘free Syrian state’.
Abu Mohammed al-Julani, leader of the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), visited Damascus' Umayyad Mosque after the group's successful rebel offensive. Using his real name, Ahmed al-Sharaa, he delivered a speech as crowds cheered and chanted ‘Allahu akbar’. Videos of the event were shared by the rebels on their Telegram channel.
The Israeli military warned residents of five towns in southern Syria to stay at home ‘until further notice’ due to ongoing combat in the area.
