New Parliament Inauguration HIGHLIGHTS: PM Modi Dedicates New Sansad Bhavan To Nation; Receives Standing Ovation

The grand inaugural event at new Parliament building was attended by former president Ram Nath Kovind, Chief Ministers Y S Jagan Reddy, Yogi Adityanath, Eknath Shinde and Neiphu Rio, foreign envoys, Parliamentarians and people from different walks of life.

"From panchayat bhawan to Sansad bhawan, our pledge and inspiration remains the development of our country and its people," says PM Modi in new Parliament.

"There was a need for new Parliament. We also have to see that the number of seats and MPs will increase in the coming time. That's why it was need of the hour that a new Parliament is made," says PM Modi.

"Several years of foreign rule stole our pride from us. Today, India has left behind that colonial mindset," says PM Narendra Modi in the new Parliament.

"India is the mother of democracy. It is also the foundation of global democracy. Democracy is our 'sanskaar', idea and tradition," says PM Modi.

"When India moves forward, then the World moves forward. This new Parliament will also lead to the development of the world through the development of India," says PM Modi.

"The holy 'Sengol' was installed in Parliament today. In the Chola dynasty, the 'Sengol' symbolised justice, righteousness and good governance," says PM Modi.

"This new Parliament will become witness to the rise of a self-reliant India," says PM Narendra Modi

"In the development journey of every country, some moments come which become immortal. 28th May is such a day," says PM Modi in the new Parliament.

"The new Parliament isn't just a building, it is the symbol of the aspiration of the 140 cr people of India. It gives a message to the world about India's determination," he says.

On the inauguration of new Parliament building, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh says, "It is a matter of immense happiness that a new modern Parliament was constructed in less than 2.5 years under the leadership of PM Modi. This day is an important milestone as it will prove to be a source of inspiration in the Amritkaal."

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also reacts to RJD's 'coffin' remark against the new Parliament building. "It would have been better if Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla inaugurated the new Parliament House. RJD has no stand, the old Parliament building did not even have clearance from Delhi Fire Service. Why are they (RJD) calling the Parliament a coffin? They could have said anything else, why do they need to bring this angle?" he asks.

Reacting sharply to RJD's 'coffin' remark on new Parliament, BJP state spokesperson Arvind Kumar Singh said: "RJD has compared the shape of the new Parliament building with a coffin. I want to say that the mindset of RJD is to go into a coffin. The mindset of RJD is affected by foreigner's slavery. On the precious and glorious movement of the country, the RJD and others are talking inauspicious. The people of the country will put them into coffins. The previous shape of Parliament was zero. So it depends on how you analyze it. I believe the RJD has the coffin mindset."

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) sparks a controversy as it compares the shape of the new building to a coffin. RJD posted two photographs on its official Twitter handle -- one is the aerial view of the newly built Parliament and the other is a coffin and also gave a caption "What is this (Ye Kya Hai)".

"We have compared the new Parliament building with the coffin as the current regime is doing the coffinism (Tabutikaran) in the country. The inauguration of a new Parliament by the prime minister is a violation of the constitution and tradition. The President is the top post in the country and Parliament. Article 79 clearly says that the president is the supreme leader of the country. We request the prime minister to avoid doing Tabutikaran of democracy in the country," says Shakti Singh Yadav, spokesperson of the RJD.

Union minister Pralhad Joshi hits out at Congress saying, "Congress can't tolerate good things happening in the country, they are lying about Sengol. Parliament is a temple of democracy, people will give them a befitting reply for the way they (RJD) are using expletives for the new Parliament."

Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda says the opposition parties should not do politics and take part in the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building to strengthen democracy.

All entry and exit gates of Central Secretariat and Udyog Bhawan metro stations have been closed for passenger movement. Interchange facilities are available at Central Secretariat, says the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

"We will not allow anything to disrupt the inauguration of the new Parliament building. The entire Delhi Police is on its toes to make sure the inauguration ceremony is conducted smoothly," says Delhi Police Special CP Deepender Pathak on wrestlers' protest.

Security has been tightened near the Ghazipur border area as Khap panchayat leaders, farmers are expected to join protesting wrestlers' march to new parliament house in Delhi today.

Members of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee were stopped by police at the Ambala border. They had come from Amritsar yesterday to take part in women wrestlers' Maha Panchayat at Delhi's Jantar Mantar today.

The wrestlers, who have been camping in Delhi to protest against the WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh, will march to the new Parliament building today. A call has also been given for a 'Mahila Mahapanchayat', for which people from neigbouring states are likely to arrive in the national capital today.

"It is a proud moment for all of us today that after independence, the world's oldest and largest democracy is getting a new parliament that is made in the country," says Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal hails new Parliament buidling, saying "It's a historic day when the PM will dedicate to the nation a new and modern Parliament building. I express my gratitude to PM for fulfilling the wishes of all Indians. We should be proud of this moment."

Ahead of the new Parliament inauguration ceremony, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw appeals to the protesting Opposition parties to join the event. He says, "Our parliament is the temple of our democracy. There was a time when Rahul Gandhi tore the ordinance by our government, our PM in front of the public and undermined our democracy. The opposition parties have always undermined democracy. I want to thank the PM for strengthening the democratic institutions. The Opposition must rethink their decision and participate in this (ceremony)."

"Today is a very important day for India as the new Parliament building will be inaugurated today. The 'Sengol' will be installed near the Speaker's chair. The PM honoured all the Adheenams yesterday," says 18th pontiff of Vellakuruchi Adheenam from Tamil Nadu, in Delhi.

The traditional 'Sengol' will be placed in the Lok Sabha chamber by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after some rituals are performed. The ceremony will be attended by priests from Tamil Nadu and the original jeweller who designed the sengol.

After the pujas are completed by 9 am, PM Modi and other dignitaries will examine the new Parliament complex. They will take a tour of the Lok Sabha's chamber and the Rajya Sabha chamber in the new Parliament building. During this, Prime Minister Modi is likely to install the Tamil historic sceptre 'Sengol' next to the Speakers chair in Lok Sabha chamber.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive at the venue at 7.15 am to lead the opening ceremony rituals. He will be accompanied by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Hariwansh and some senior ministers in the government.
