ABVP’s Riya Chhawdi has won the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) Secretary post in the 2026 elections, securing 21,650 votes. She defeated NSUI’s Namrata Chaudhary, who received 14,869 votes. Chhawdi won the Secretary contest by a margin of 6,781 votes. 

"I am absolutely overjoyed by this victory. As the only woman candidate, I am ready to do everything within my power for the students during my tenure. We are a student organisation. We do not focus on political agendas; our goal is to resolve students' issues. That is why the students placed their trust in us, resulting in ABVP winning three seats. First and foremost, I always emphasise that women's safety will be my top priority. Beyond that, we are fully committed to fulfilling everything outlined in our manifesto, whether it concerns women's safety, audits of PGs (paying guest accommodations), or campus security," ANI quoted Chhawdi.

The result was part of a strong showing by ABVP in the DUSU elections, with the organisation winning three of the four central posts. ABVP’s Yash Dabas won the President post with 24,576 votes, while Lakshya Raj Singh won Joint Secretary with 16,641 votes. Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen won the Vice-President post with 30,634 votes.

Who Is Riya Chhawdi?

Riya Chhawdi is a BA Programme  4th-year student at Sri Aurobindo College, University of Delhi. She is a native of Modband village, Badarpur, Delhi, and hails from a farming family. She is an inter-college basketball player and has represented her college in the same.

Her candidate profile states that Chhawdi has been an ABVP member since 2023. She is also the College Unit Vice-President at Sri Aurobindo College and has actively participated in many student activities and organisational activities at the university.

For DUSU Elections 2026-27, the ABVP has nominated her for the post of Secretary, alongside Yash Dabas (President), Ishu Maurya (Vice-President), and Lakshya Raj Singh (Joint-Secretary).

When Did DUSU Vote Counting Begin?

Counting of votes for the DUSU elections began at 8 am on September 19, 2026, at the University Sports Stadium’s Multipurpose Hall in North Campus. Voting had taken place on September 18 across Delhi University, with the overall turnout recorded at 40.46 per cent.

During the early rounds, Chhawdi maintained her lead in the Secretary contest. She eventually finished with 21,650 votes and secured the post.
