Mumbai: Commuters travelling between the Nehru Science Centre and Nehru Planetarium in Worli are expected to save up to 15 minutes of travel time following the completion of a flyover and subway project.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a deadline of January 31, 2027, to complete the work. Once operational, the new route will significantly cut down travel times and ease daily commutes in the area.

Direct Route To Eliminate Worli Naka Detour
Constructed over the Nehru Science Centre drain, the project creates a direct link between Dr E Moses Road and Dr Annie Besant Road. While the two landmark institutions sit adjacent to one another, motorists currently navigate a nearly 2-km detour through the heavily congested Worli Naka (Acharya Atre Chowk) junction.
The 571-metre flyover aims to remove this bottleneck. The flyover will also offer direct access for traffic from Lower Parel, Mahalaxmi, and Curry Road heading toward the Coastal Road.
Project Cost And Status
The project, estimated to cost Rs 285.61 crore, consists of an 18.3-metre-wide flyover alongside a pedestrian subway. Key work completed or currently in progress includes:
- Foundation: Piling work using 1,200 mm diameter piles is fully complete in both the Nehru Science Centre and Jijamata Nagar sections.
- Girders and Beams: Construction and erection stand at 17 out of 18 girder spans and 13 out of 14 portal beams.
- Deck Surface: Deck slab concreting is underway, along with ongoing portal beam and girder fabrication at off-site production facilities.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar on Thursday visited the project site for an inspection and directed officials to deploy additional manpower and machinery to ensure the deadline is met.
