  1. Messaging apps require active SIM card from January 2027.
  2. DoT rule mandates continuous SIM linking for security.
  3. Initiative targets cybercrime, making tracing easier for authorities.

Starting January 1, 2027, WhatsApp and Telegram users will have to use a security feature called "SIM binding". This means your messaging apps must stay directly and continuously linked to an active SIM card; without it, you won't be able to use the messaging app.

Under the rules issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), messaging platforms must ensure that accounts remain continuously linked to the active SIM card associated with the registered mobile number.

The compliance deadline for the directive has been extended to December 31, 2026, meaning the new requirement will take effect from next year.

What changes?

At present, you only need a SIM card to verify your phone number once when you first download the app. After that, you can take the SIM out, use Wi-Fi, or use WhatsApp Web on your laptop without needing that SIM nearby.

But starting next year, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal messaging and calling apps will require the actual, active SIM card to be present in the device. If the SIM is removed, deactivated, or missing, the app may stop working.

To reduce cybercrime and online scams (like fake investment frauds and "digital arrest" scams), this initiative has been carried out. Criminals often set up accounts using Indian phone numbers, take out the SIM, and operate the scams remotely, often from outside India, making them hard to catch. This rule makes accounts much easier for authorities to trace.

Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said, “The government has issued directions to certain app-based communication service providers to link the SIM card (associated with the mobile number used for identification of customers/users or for provisioning or delivery of services) present in the device of the customer/user with the communication service apps concerned and has specified the timeframe for compliance with the same as December 31, 2026. "

How Will This Affect Everyday Users?

- Regular Smartphones: If your primary SIM stays inside your phone, you likely won't notice any change.

- Tablets or Wi-Fi-Only Devices: If you use apps like WhatsApp on a tablet or secondary device that doesn't have a SIM card slot, you might run into issues.

- WhatsApp Web / Web-Linked Devices: You may be automatically logged out of your laptop or web browser more frequently and be required to rescan a QR code to log back in.
