Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has slammed the people explaining the "Brahmins are getting profit" remarks by US President Donald Trump's advisor Peter Navarro. She stated that those defending Navarro's remarks are “friends of imperialists”, adding that the nation needs to be cautious of such people. A major controversy sparked after Navarro claimed that "Brahmins" were getting the profit from the oil India purchased from Russia. While some of the people stated that the US official was targeting one of the caste groups of India, others pointed out that Navarro had referred to "Boston Brahmin" (the elite section of the society).
In an interview with CNBC TV18, the finance minister stated that Indians should think for themselves and not take seriously the people attempting to "divide and rule". “Exactly the same divide and rule principle that the British used, which the imperialists used here. And today, you have the friends of the imperialists telling us, ‘you know the expression Boston Brahmins is this and not that'. Who damn cares? I’m sorry. Who damn cares? I want Indians to think for ourselves,” Sitharaman asserted.

“I want those Indians who are now defending that language to get up and say, ‘We are free from you all now for over 75-80 years. We’ll mind our business, we’ll take care of ourselves. Refrain from using these words,’” she further stated. Earlier last week, Navarro claimed that the affordable oil was benefitting only the elite section of India, adding that the government must think about the rest of the population. “Brahmins are profiteering from Russian oil in India,” Navarro stated.

Amid a huge controversy, TMC MP Sagarika Ghose claimed that people could not understand the reference the US official was making. "Boston Brahmin” was once a widely used term in the US to refer to the American New England. “Brahmin” is still a term used in the English-speaking world to denote social or economic “elites” (in this case, the rich). The illiteracy on X is astonishing," Ghose stated in a post on X.
