Nowgam Police Station Blast: Nine people were killed and 32 others injured in a "massive" accidental explosion at the Nowgam police station, located on the outskirts of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, late on Friday. Authorities described the incident as accidental but linked it to a recent large-scale explosives recovery carried out during a terror module crackdown in Faridabad, Haryana.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the cause of the incident is under investigation and that any other speculation regarding the blast was unnecessary.

Officials stated that a large cache of explosive substances and chemicals had been recovered during the probe into a terror module and was being securely stored in an open area within the premises of Nowgam police station.

As part of the standard prescribed procedure, the recovered explosives were forwarded for forensic and chemical examination, Lokhande said.

The blast occurred while forensic experts were extracting samples from a cache of explosives recovered from Faridabad, Jammu and Kashmir Police chief Nalin Prabhat said on Saturday.

Due to the voluminous nature of the recovery, the procedure had been ongoing continuously for the last two days, he added.

Owing to the "unstable and sensitive" nature of the materials, the recovery was being handled with extreme care under expert supervision, the joint secretary said.

"However, during the process, an accidental explosion took place at about 11.20 pm on the night of 14 November. In this unfortunate accidental incident, nine people have lost their lives, whereas 27 police personnel, two revenue officials and three civilians have sustained injuries," Lokhande said.

The police station suffered severe damage, while some nearby buildings were also affected, he added.

Why were explosives transported to Kashmir from Faridabad?

The large cache of explosives that exploded at Nowgam police station in Jammu and Kashmir had been transported from Faridabad, Haryana, in a Tata 407 pickup truck in small bags and was under expert examination when the "accident" occurred.

A senior official said investigators were still attempting to determine the potential targets of the terror module, which had accumulated a large quantity of explosives some of which had exploded near the Red Fort in Delhi, killing 13 people on 10 November.

The blast occurred while a specialised team was extracting samples from the large and "unstable" cache of explosives, according to Jammu and Kashmir Police.

The explosives were seized from Faridabad during raids on 9-10 November and later transported to Kashmir in a Tata 407 vehicle in small bags, following full protocol, the senior official said.

Regarding the reason for transporting the explosives to Nowgam, the official stated that the original case was registered at Nowgam police station and the explosives were the case property of that station. Therefore, there was a need to transport the explosives there.
