Customs officials at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar seized ganja (cannabis) worth approximately Rs 4 crore during a routine security check on Tuesday. Officials suspect that the narcotics were brought into the city for consumption during the upcoming New Year celebrations.
According to sources, a passenger arriving on an international flight has been detained in connection with the case and is currently being questioned.
The seizure was made by Customs officials while screening a passenger's luggage. acting on specific intelligence, the officials intercepted the consignment and recovered a large quantity of ganja, which had been concealed inside the bags.
Suspected New Year Supply Chain
Sources indicate that the preliminary investigation suggests the seized contraband was intended for distribution during "Zero Night" (New Year's Eve) celebrations. Customs officials had received confidential inputs regarding potential drug smuggling through the airport, leading to intensified checks.
Initial investigations revealed that the detained passenger had arrived in Bhubaneswar from Bangkok via an IndiGo flight. Investigative agencies are currently examining his travel history and probing potential links to any inter-state or international drug smuggling networks.
During interrogation, it was also revealed that the consignment was intended to be transported by road to an undisclosed location after reaching Bhubaneswar. The identity of the detained individual has not yet been made public. Further investigation is underway to trace the source and final destination of the narcotics.
Heightened Vigilance Before Zero Night
This seizure comes at a time when security arrangements in Bhubaneswar have been tightened in anticipation of New Year celebrations. The Commissionerate Police has announced a "Zero Tolerance" policy across the city.
According to police officials, intensive checks, continuous patrolling, and the deployment of additional forces are being carried out throughout the city to prevent any illegal activities, including drug smuggling. Officials stated that all enforcement agencies are coordinating closely to monitor air, road and public movement during the festive period.
